Once Thunder, Lightning, and Snowflake were all going to the birthday of their close relative, Rain. They all were excited to go celebrate their cousin's birthday, but their mother, Cloud, was sick and could not go. As such, Snowflake was hesitant to go. "How can I leave my dear mother all home alone and in a terrible state while I go have fun with no worry", she thought to her self. Nevertheless, Thunder and Lightning were adamant that they all go and thus Snowflake tagged along. Despite the festive mod, Snowflake felt more and more guilty about her sick mother. She saw Thunder and Lightning cracking jokes and dancing, acting as if they had no worries in the world. Snowflake could not handle it any longer. She quickly took an Uber back home, and tended to her mother. Thunder and Lightning, being the party animals of the family, remained at the party until the early hours of morning before they finally came back home. When they arrived, they saw that their mother had miraculously recovered from her illness. She was waiting at the doorsteps with a stern look and Snowflake standing by her side. Immediately, Thunder and Lightning knew they had done something wrong. "Where were you all?", asked Cloud to her two teenage sons. "Ummm... we were out with Rain! It was her birthday yesterday!", exclaimed Lightning. "But did you guys see how sick I was yesterday? Why did you not come take care of me like your sister did?", responded Cloud. The two boys were silent and could not muster a response. "Well, well. If you boys cannot give me a good reason then it is only right for me to punish you", continued Cloud. For her first punishment she cursed Thunder that he would be surrounded by a loud and frightening sound, scaring people away from. Lightning was cursed to be bright and hot and also would be avoided by all who were near him. Snowflake on the other hand avoided any punishment and remained attractive to all people near her.
Bibliography: Indian Fairy Tales by Joseph Jacobs with illustrations by John D. Batten (1912).
Author's Note: The general plot of the story is the same, but I did change the characters. Rather than using the sun, moon, wind, or star, I decided to incorporate other Earthly beings into the story. Lightning and Thunder are mentioned in the original story, but they do not have any prominent role. Also I changed the story of the mother. Rather than not having food, I characterized her as being ill.

Nicepic: Lightning/Thunder, unloyal sons
Hi Neal! I absolutely loved this story. I think it is a cute explanation of thunder, lightning, and snow. I had no idea what was exactly happening which made the story very intriguing. I was shocked when Cloud got better and then punished thunder and lightning. It is a very literal story when applied to a family with three kids, and makes you wonder which kid you would be with your unique family dynamics.
ReplyDeleteHi Neal! This was such an adorable story! I did not expect the ending of this story to explain why loud sounds accompany thunder and why bright light accompanies lightning. I think the story was going to go a completely different way but I love the ending. Furthermore, I liked how you incorporated other Earthly beings. I feel that it brought more personality to the story and made it more interesting!
